Formerly, the Republic of Texas, this land won independence from Mexican control in 1836. That was the same year that pioneers Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie were killed in the siege of the Alamo which is such a famous battle that is was even made into a major motion picture. Known as the “Lone Star State,” Texas was the 28th state to enter into the Union in 1845. It is the second largest state in area in the 50 United States and the largest of the joined 48 states. Texas gets its name from the Spanish, of course, but also comes from Indian Words that have the meaning of “friends” or “allies.”

Texas has the history of a wild frontier and when many people think of Texas they picture old cowboy and Indian movies with small taverns and duels. Today, Texas is an important factor in the production of oil in the U.S. but it also has much importance to finance and industry. The state flower of Texas is the bluebonnet and it is sometimes said that the bluebonnet “is to Texas what the shamrock is to Ireland.” There is even an annual Bluebonnet Festival every year.
