South Dakota is one of the Great Plains states and it was given its name by the Sioux Indians Dakota Division, just like North Dakota. South Dakota’s nickname is the Coyote State. South Dakota was admitted into the Union at the same time North Dakota was and the lands were divided on the 46th parallel of latitude. The state consists mainly of rural areas and less than ten percent of the population is of the American Indian culture.

The most well known place in South Dakota is Mount Rushmore which is where four presidents are carved into the Black Hills. These four presidents are Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, Washington, and Lincoln. You may have also heard of the Crazy Horse Monument that is being constructed to honor the Oglala Sioux war chief. The capital of South Dakota is Pierre and the largest city is Sioux Falls. South Dakota’s state flower is the pasqueflower which is also known as the May Day flower. When the May Day flower blooms it is known to be one of the first signs that spring is on the way in South Dakota.
