The fact that there are over 12,000 lakes and other bodies of water spread about the state of Minnesota is why is was given the nickname, the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” The name Minnesota comes from a word that the Sioux, or Dakota, Indians used to describe how the water of the Minnesota River was tinted like the sky. The pink and white lady’s slipper is the Minnesota’s state flower and the state three is the Norway pine, also known as the red pine. St. Paul is the capital and the largest city is Minneapolis.
