Maine...
In area, Maine is the largest of all the states that are considered to be part of New England. It was the 23rd state to join the Union in 1820 and despite its size, it is the least densely inhabited state in the area. In fact, it is the least densely inhabited state to the east of the Mississippi River. The capital of Maine is Augusta. Ninety percent of the land in Maine is covered with forest land which brings no surprise as it’s nickname is the “Pine Tree State.” Thanks to all of the wooded land, the economy in Maine relies greatly on industries that are timber related and that produce paper and paper products. It is also no surprise with the forest area that the state flower is the white pine cone and tassel.

Despite the immensely wooded lands of Maine, its economy is also given a boost by the many people that vacation in this great state every summer to what they call “Vacationland.” Perhaps this is to escape the heat of many of the states to the south since Maine has a nice mild summertime climate where hot, muggy days are rare.
