Kansas entered the Union as the 34th state in 1861 and is often referred to as the “Sunflower State.” The Kansa or Kaw Indians are what inspired the name for this state and its major river, the Kaw River. “Kansas” is a word that comes from the Sioux Indians and means “south wind people.” Kansas is actually located at the magnetic center of the United States. This means that any land survey that is done in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, use Kansas as the reference point. The actual center point of the 48 connected states of the U.S. is located in a pasture in Kansas.

The state flower of Kansas is the native sunflower and the capital is Topeka. Topeka is one of the best places to go when visiting Kansas. It even has its own biking trail map which is actually very common in many Kansas cities such as Garden City, the Kansas City metro Area, and Manhattan (yes in Kansas) because biking is a popular activity in Kansas.
