Colorado became part of the Union as the 38th state in 1976 which is when the United States turned 100 and this is why it is also called the “Centennial State.” The state got its name from a Spanish word that means “ruddy” or “red,” which describes the color of much of the land in the state. Colorado is well known for its many peaks over 14,000 feet which are part of the Rocky Mountains. These mountain ranges are covered in snow during the winter and they are great for winter sports such as skiing and snowmobiling. They are also what inspired the name for the Colorado Rockies MLB team.

The capital of Colorado is Denver, home of the Denver Broncos NFL team and Nuggets NBA team, and the state flower is the Rocky Mountain columbine. Other than winter recreation, the land in Colorado is great for its agricultural acreage and cattle ranches.
