1819 is when Alabama joined the Union as the 22nd state. The Heart of Dixie is what many people call Alabama but it is also known as the Cotton State and the Yellowhammer State. Alabama’s capital is Montgomery, Camellia is the state flower, and the Southern Longleaf Pine is the state tree. The name Alabama comes from an Indian word that means "thicket clearers." This is likely because many battles between Native Americans and white settlers took place in Alabama.

Alabama is where the first Space Camp in the U.S. was developed and it is one of three camps of its kind in the U.S. Space Camp allows kids to experience what space is like without leaving home. Speaking of space, on November 12, 1833, there was an awesome meteor shower that fell across the southeast. This event became known as "the night stars fell on Alabama” and people spoke of it so fondly that it became a part of Alabama folklore for years. Today, the license plates even say, "Stars Fell on Alabama."
